From Academia to Industry - Things to Know Before You Transition
Over a year ago, I moved from academia to industry. Here are a few things I think one should consider before making the move:
- Research the differences beforehand – academia and industry are two different arenas - there are similarities of course, but the differences are substantial.
- Be clear about what you enjoy doing – If you love research, academia is your best bet. In contrast, if you enjoy finding solutions to problems that clients are grappling with now, industry is your best bet. If you love both, you can have the best of both worlds by narrowing your job search to research-based roles in industry.
- Be comfortable with your choice – there are no wrong choices. Both tracks can be enjoyable and fulfilling. You just need to pick whichever you are comfortable with.
