As strange as it sounds, it is those who subject themselves to hardship in the pursuit of self discipline that enjoy happy lives. At least that is the argument from day 24 of the 365 days of self-discipline book by Martin Meadow. The key, as the argument goes is thinking long term. When you start the journey of depriving yourself certain pleasure, it certainly does feel like you are enjoying it. However, given enough time, you end up happy and grateful that you made that decision.

As the quote from the book runs:

It is one of the strange ironies of this strange life that those who work the hardest, who subject themselves to the strictest discipline, who give up certain pleasurable things in order to achieve a goal, are the happiest. - Martin Meadow
