Day 18 of the 365 days of self-discipline book talks about higher standards. The author argues that the road to self-discipline demands that we hold ourselves to our own standards. The argument is that if we follow other people’s standards, we may never actually reach pour goals. As such, the only standards that should concern us are our own.The author starts with a quote that I loved:

Hold yourself responsible for a higher standard than anybody else expects of you. Never excuse yourself. Never pity yourself. Be a hard master to yourself — and be lenient to everybody else. — Henry Ward Beecher

This theme reminded me of a quote I read a few months ago: ‘Narrow the focus; raise the standards’
