The Selfish Gene (Richard Dawkins)

One of the best scientific books I have ever read is The Selfish Gene by Richard Dawkins. A few quotes from the book can be read below:

  • We are survival machines – robot vehicles blindly programmed to preserve the selfish molecules known as genes.
  • Unfortunately, however much we may deplore something, it does not stop being true.
  • The genes are not destroyed by crossing-over, they merely change partners and march on. Of course they march on. That is their business. They are the replicators and we are their survival machines. When we have served our purpose we are cast aside. But genes are denizens of geological time: genes are forever.
  • In the beginning was simplicity.
  • The rabbit runs faster than the fox, because the rabbit is running for his life while the fox is only running for his dinner.
  • Living organisms had existed on earth, without ever knowing why, for over three thousand million years before the truth finally dawned on one of them. His name was Charles Darwin.
  • The genes are master programmers, and they are programming for their lives.
